Regenerative agriculture: from healthy soil to pure taste

Where does your spice actually come from? Who grew it, and how? At Verstegen, we believe that flavor and sustainability go hand in hand. That's why we're committed to regenerative agriculture: a farming method that doesn't deplete nature, but rather helps it recover. Together, we create a more resilient food system that's better able to withstand the effects of climate change, such as extreme drought and soil erosion. By maintaining healthy soil and strengthening biodiversity, we ensure that farmers can continue to grow their herbs and spices in the future.

What regenerative agriculture really means

Regenerative agriculture is all about working with nature. It's a way of working where farmers ensure healthy soil, the foundation for increased biodiversity, better water management, and carbon sequestration. Together, we build a resilient agriculture that not only takes but also gives back to nature and the farmer.

And we do that in several ways:

  • We encourage crop diversity in a way that is feasible and scalable for local farmers and appropriate for the crop. This contributes to soil health and risk mitigation.
  • We focus on soil protection by allowing roots to grow year-round and using ground cover or plant residues. This prevents dehydration, erosion, and nutrient loss, and keeps soil life active. More and more of our partners are participating.
  • In our projects, we see that regenerative agriculture contributes to the restoration of ecosystems and, consequently, to the return of wildlife. For example, we recently saw a sloth among our vanilla plants in Costa Rica: a sign that nature and agriculture are starting to strengthen each other again.
  • Finally, we promote smart land use and natural fertilization. By sharing knowledge and taking small steps, we help farmers gradually transition away from intensive cultivation and the use of artificial fertilizers.

Climate-resilient farming starts at the source

At Verstegen, everything revolves around flavor. But true flavor begins at the source: healthy soil, a strong ecosystem, and farmers who can work sustainably. Regenerative agriculture helps farmers become more resilient to drought, disease, or crop failure. By combining different crops and trees, they become less dependent on a single harvest. And that benefits both now and for generations to come.

What makes it extra powerful? We not only ensure greater biodiversity and fertile soil, but also lower CO2 emissions. This way, we're building climate-resilient agriculture together.

How we are already working on regenerative agriculture

This approach requires collaboration, knowledge, and the will to do things differently. That's why we collaborate with partners worldwide, from close by in the Netherlands to far away in Costa Rica and Indonesia. We support farmers with training, share knowledge about regenerative agriculture, and set up pilot projects for projects like: pepper , vanilla or Nutmeg . Transparency plays a key role in this: we want to be able to show exactly where our spices come from, who grows them, and the journey they take. This way, we map the entire supply chain, from the field in Indonesia to your kitchen cupboard.

It's not a matter of getting everything right the first time, but of continuing to test, learn, and adapt, because every landscape demands a different approach. Every step brings us closer to more fertile soil.

Every little choice really makes a difference

By consciously choosing products grown regeneratively, you contribute to an agricultural system that restores soil health. You support farmers who work carefully for their land and contribute to biodiversity and reduced emissions.

This way, you can enjoy authentic flavors, grown with care for our planet. Every time you choose Verstegen, you're truly adding value and making a difference. Right from your kitchen!
