Sumac

Sumac is a shrub that can grow to about 3 meters tall. Its leaves are pinnate and produce small, dark red berries. The shrub is a member of the smoke tree family and blooms during June and July. The berries are bright red and have a strong lemon flavor, making it a unique spice.

Verstegen's Sumak comes from Turkey because of its good quality.

The timing of adding herbs and spices is crucial. For example, sumac loses its aroma when heated for long periods, which is something you don't want. Our picolier shares these and other tips in the video.

The origin of sumac

The sumac plant grows in dry, rocky soil in the Mediterranean region, such as Turkey. Verstegen's sumac also originates from this region because of the distinctive flavor and color of its berries. Turkish sumac has a bright red color and is sweet.
