Thyme

Thyme is an herb from an aromatic plant that grows to a height of 20 to 40 centimeters. The plant's stem is greenish-brown and covered with upright branches bearing small, narrow, elliptical, grayish-green leaves, each measuring between 2 and 5 millimeters. The leaves are slightly curled at the edge and covered with white, felt-like hairs on the underside. New green upright branches bearing these leaves appear every spring.

OUR PICOLIER WILL TELL YOU MORE!

Thyme grows best in stony, rocky soil. The herb is native to areas around the Mediterranean. It's also exported and cultivated worldwide. Verstegen sources various thyme varieties from Poland, Turkey, and Germany. Our Picolier will tell you more about the herb's uses.

The taste of thyme

Did you know that a mature thyme plant has the best color, aroma, and flavor? Thyme has a spicy, slightly bitter flavor. Dried thyme has stronger aromas than fresh thyme. Therefore, fresh herbs aren't necessarily stronger in flavor. Verstegen always delivers the very best quality in flavor, and that also applies to thyme. To achieve that very best flavor, it's best to source the herb from its source.

How can you use thyme in the kitchen?

Thyme is perfect for use in stews where it simmers. This works well with meat, poultry, and vegetable stews! It also pairs well with oven-baked dishes. Not only that, but it's also delicious with potato wedges or roasted carrots. Thyme is a key ingredient in popular Provençal and Italian herb mixes. It's also essential for preserving olives.
