Serve this sweet breakfast dish with dulce de leche cream and almonds caramelized in maple syrup. Surprise your mother on Mother's Day, or just because, with breakfast in bed.

How to make dulce de leche yourself:

Making your own dulce de leche is very easy. Place a can of condensed milk in a large pot of water. Bring the water to a boil and simmer gently for 3 hours. Make sure the can stays submerged at all times! Check regularly to make sure there's enough water in the pot and add more if necessary. Let the can cool completely before opening.

Combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and cornstarch in a bowl. Add the ground cinnamon and ground cardamom and mix well.

Separate the eggs. Add the buttermilk, oil, and egg yolks to the dry mixture and mix everything with a mixer until smooth.

Beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form and fold them into the batter until fluffy. Make sure to beat as few times as possible and retain as much air as possible.

Bake the waffles according to the waffle iron's instructions.

Remove the cream cheese from the refrigerator and let it come to room temperature.

Beat the heavy cream, cream cheese, and dulce de leche in a mixing bowl until light and smooth.

Coarsely chop the almonds and toast them in a dry pan until golden brown. Add the maple syrup at the end. Cook briefly until the almonds are caramelized. Let the caramelized almonds cool briefly and then chop them a little smaller if necessary.

Serve the waffles with the dulce de leche cream and garnish with the caramelized almonds.

  • 225 g bloem
  • 1 tl bakpoeder
  • 1 tl zout
  • 35 g maïzena
  • 1 tl Kaneel (gemalen)
  • 1 tl Kardemom (gemalen)
  • 375 ml karnemelk
  • 60 ml plantaardige olie
  • 2 eieren
  • Voor de dulce de lecheroom:
  • 4 el dulce de leche (1 blikje gecondenseerde melk)
  • 100 ml slagroom
  • 25 g roomkaas
  • Voor de garnering:
  • 75 g amandelen
  • 1 el ahornsiroop
